The first time is mentioned in 599 in the first letter of Pope Gregory to the Archbishop of Ravenna. A rich history is preserved in parts of the medieval walls, the palace (the most famous palace is Rigo) and several churches.
Besides the parish church St.Pelagio is standing a bell tower built in 1883 modeled on the church tower of St. Mark's in Venice.

Today Novigrad is a real jewel of the west coast of Istria, gladly visited by many tourists to enjoy not only the mild climate and clear waters but also in a variety of delicacies in many restaurants, fine wines and olive oil, and because of its special charm is a popular location for buyers of real estate.
