After the Romans, the place was ruled by the Byzantines, the Lombards, and Franks. In the 13th century, Rovinj was ruled Venice, whose rule lasted until the late 18th century. From the 17th until the second half of the 19th century Rovinj was a very developed maritime city. After the fall of Venice residents have taken control of the town and keep it during the Austrian and French administration. By the end of the World War I Austro-Hungarian government ruled Rovinj, and thereafter until the Second World War Rovinj was managed by Italy. In 1947 it went to Yugoslavia. The old town of Rovinj is declared as a historical monument in 1963.

Every summer, the art exhibition to open in Grisia. At the end of August, the traditional Rovinj's night with fireworks and open air concerts take place one the main square.
